Fill in the Blanks Friday

Linking up with Lauren again. Check out her little place on the web - the Little Things We Do.

1.  My bedtime routine includes,   watching tv/reading/blogs/photos, and then after shutting the house down, I always check on the Goose before going to bed myself.
2.   I am   actually enjoying the rainy weather we’re having. I woke up to loud, cracking thunder this morning, and then it started to pour and I just thought it was such a nice sound. Then I put on a comfy sweater tunic and headed out for work. It’s not too cold so I kinda enjoy it.

3.  I can't stand     pregnant women who can’t keep their complaining to themselves       because     it makes them sound so ignorant and ungrateful. They must have missed the memo on what a miracle is  .
4. My idea of relaxation would be   laying in a hammock on the beach with a book .

5. If I had an extra $50, I would    buy some organization items. Our house is crazy right now. I smell a frantic throw-out session soon.

6. The best thing about a bloggy friend is
I don’t know. I’m not here often enough or making it known enough to have “friends” yet. Though I’m a pretty loyal follower of lots of blogs and I do feel like I know those people.
7.  A recipe I've been dying to try is   I don’t have the link at the moment, but homemade reeses eggs. Back when it was Easter, we hadn’t gotten the ok just yet for the Goose to have peanut butter. I didn’t want to spend time baking something that I couldn’t share with him . Since then we’ve gotten the green light and he LOVES peanut butter. I think they’ll be happening real soon.

Okay, so I broke my promise, but non-iphone pics are coming soon. They're actually on my computer waiting to be uploaded!
Also, we are proud owners of a new 2012 Toyota Rav4. Quite frankly, it's not my favorite visually, but its a great source of space for our family and we feel like we can grow into it over some time. It's a quality car, has good safety ratings, and had enough gadgets to make M happy. We're so excited!
Have a great weekend all!

WGW

I did not get through the weekend as planned. I did, indeed, get white girl wasted. I do, however, remember everything. And it was awesome. But just as predicted, yesterday was misery. Well, actually just the four hour car drive home (there may or may not have been an emergency pull over for puking after some scary downhill turns). Once I arrived home, I was safe, which was such a relief.
Here's just a few pics. The best ones will not be posted here, to protect the guilty innocent.

Gdamned Lemon Update

I'm not neglecting you, promise. Well, okay. I am a little, but not on purpose. It's for good reason.

One, we're narrowing down our options for our NEW car! Yes, we junked the gdamned lemon (edit: will be, when we get the new one). We're on a very tight deadline (the end of the month is the best time to buy a car, and we surely can't wait until the end of next month), and plusalso I'm not even home during most of this search to boot - I've been working this past week and will be away for most of this upcoming weekend. I spent two days out of three visiting dealerships so far but the rest, and possiblly final decision, is up to M this weekend. We like a few different cars, but can't seem to nail down our favorite. With such a tight budget but having bigtime needs, we're just not finding the perfect combination of hitting everything we need vs. what we can afford. Well be sacrificing somewhere, so we just have to choose whats most important. Safety is both of our top priorities, space is my second. M takes care of all the engine requirements and we're trying to meet in the middle on the rest. Turns out I'm a wierdo when it comes to cars. I prefer little to none of the bells and whistles they try to sell you on. Perfect example - why does noone have roll down windows anymore? I have a very ridiculous, irrational fear of my car driving off of a bridge with me in it. Windows would be the only way out. Power windows = death. Well at least in my book. (sidenote, I'm pretty over this fear, but the christmas after I got my first car, both my parents and my grandmother bought me those emergency car hammer thingys that shatter windows and have a knife to cut seatbelts. They were my favorite gifts that year. This is sadly, not an exaggeration or a lie).

That was a nice little side-rant...

Two, I'll be gone all weekend because I have a bachelorette party and I'm pretty effin psyched. I realize some might say my priorities are little off, being that we have to buy a car and all. But I've been waiting for this weekend for a long time and I NEED the time away. I'm snappy, cranky and just need quick little refreshing break. It was only this morning that I realized this will be the longest I'll have ever been away from the Goose. Ever. I've never been more that 24 hours away from him in entirety. I think it will be good. And it's only two nights. My goal for the weekend is to NOT get white girl wasted. I used to be a pro at that - getting white girl wasted and blacking out, only to recover the next day like nothing ever happened. Now, two glasses of whatever poison I'm drinking and the next day might as well not exist. Actually, I wish the next day after drinking woudln't exist, because it's usually a living hell. I do not hangover well. I throw up until well into the evening, headaches turn into migraines and I'm generally a ball of puke misery. (Unless you get me a Mr. Softee black-and-white shake, then my soul is saved). Regardless of all of the fun mentioned above, I AM excited for this weekend. We're heading upstate to a Tap (Beer) Fest and staying in a cute little condo. There's 12 of us, shouldn't be too crazy and the bride is laid back and AWESOME. She's not into making this a phallic-shaped/pink feather boa party. Just a nice weekend away with a side of booziness. Perfection.

When I return, more on the car. And I absolutely promise that in the next week you will have photos. Not from my iPhone, though there may be some of those too. And no, none of them will be from this weekend. Well, maybe...

Enjoy your weekend!

Fill In the Blank Friday

Happy Friday!
It's blanks time. Link up with Lauren over at her place, The Little Things We Do, for some fun.

1.  Today is a great day because  its Friday, it's beautiful and I think I'll have a margarita when I get hom  .
2.   Tomorrow I will  wake up bright and early and bring the g-damned car to the mechanic for a last attempt at saving our lemon, then travel an hour and half upstate for a babyshower. I'm unlike most people - I love showers, and I also am so excited for the mom and dad-to-be (they were trying for a long time), so it should be a good day    .

3.  My favorite time of day is     it's the moment I walk into the Goose's room and he puts on the hugest smile the second I walk in the door. If I could seal up that feeling in a jar and sell it, I'd be rich.

4. Sometimes you just have to   eat chocolate.

5. A song that I just can't get enough of lately is   "We are young" by Fun <<<    me too! .

6. My favorite accessory is    my silver fingerprint necklace that the Goose's thumb is imprinted into. It's like I always have a piece of him. Plus, I always am complimented on it, and how special it is.

7.  My favorite thing about this week was   going to the beach!!! Also, gardening.

Hope to be back very soon with pictures, and possibly a video of the Goose going nuts in a fit of delirium that had me cry-laughing. I'm still deciding if I want the internet to be aware of just how cluttered my kitchen is in real life.
Have a great weekend!

We're Alive

Yep, we've survived. And I emphasize "we" because even though M was the one having surgery, our whole house was affected. Oh yeah, and there were some other mini-disasters taking place simultaneously, but, we're still standing.

First priority - M is doing fantastic. I mean, I am reporting back nearly a month post surgery, but seriously, he's such a trooper. The first week was a little hairy, with me stepping in to help M with nearly every single task (let's just say we had many "intimate" moments, and I'm not talking about the romantic kind). I don't know if it's mental or me being more hopeful, but I'm inclined to say that his physical and mental recovery this time around are seriously improved. He's more himself, less cranky than after his last surgery. I think somewhere in the back of both of our minds, with the last surgery, we both just knew it wouldn't be successful. I couldn't be any happier for M. He's still got a long way to go, and the pain isn't gone just yet, but I'd say that I'm beyond impressed with how he's handled such an emotional and painful experience. I just keep thinking of how exciting the day will be when he is able to run around and play with the Goose like he's never been able to do before - just like he's been dreaming of since we found out we were pregnant (seriously, M is a big kid. From the day we found out, he was all "I can't wait to teach him/her to play sports and wrestle and just PLAY with them). My heart will be so happy.

Second - mini disasters? Hmm, maybe I'm being a bit dramatic, but in such a time of high stress and exhaustion, we didn't need anything added to our plate. But, life has a funny way of being ironic, so the extra stress piled on. Let me vent explain. The Goose was also a trooper and hopped around from our house, to my mom's house, to my MIL's house for about two weeks (and he still is, but not nearly as much, only about an extra day or two a week when M would have normally been watching him). With all that hopping around, and with this crazy weather (80, in March? really?) the Goose managed to get a pretty bad cold. Which came and went, and then came again. All in all he had a runny nose/cough/congestion/fever over the course of three weeks. Yep, three weeks. Poor, poor kid. He slept pretty well, but had his bouts of sleeplessness here and there b/c of it. There was a doctors visit, but overall he did pretty well and it stayed out of terrible-cold-land.
Next up is our car. Our g-damned car. We bought a very good condition, new-to-us car about a week before the Goose was born back in 2010. Turns out we bought a lemon. We paid a decent amount in cash for the car (I didn't want monthly payments - and, as explained in a past post this was actually the money we were saving for the staircase project), and have since had to pour in a few thousand more. About a week after M's surgery, the conclusion was the the g-damned car needs a new engine. ENGINE. Those things aren't cheap people. So, for the third year in a row, our savings for the staircase project are being put towards something else. And now we're considering a new car instead of fixing this lemon. We're trying to balance our options of new vs fixing and exactly how much of our saving we want to compromise vs taking on a car payment. I hate being an adult.

Other mini disasters include, but are not limited to:  making sure the house is cleaner than usual since I didn't want to scare away the visiting nurses and PT's that were coming in on a daily basis (which in reality means being on top of my typical chores which rarely happens, plus taking on M's half of the house duties - fun); fight with and clean up after an overflown toilet that the Goose thought would be fun to play with (which also entailed cleaning up the Goose); fight with the surgeon's staff and the visitng nurse services over the phone to fix mistakes they made with medications/post-op procedures (kind of serious mistakes that could have caused major problems); dealing with the mini-meltdown I had because of all of the previously mentioned items happening in the course of 7-10 days. Oh yeah, and lastly there was that entire day-long hangover from the bottle(s) of wine I drank - with my MIL- after there were some anger-inducing issues with a family member that we decided to vent about (her mostly, but I'm nothing if not a good drinking buddy). Also, said "issues" royally pissed me off to the extent that I'm pretty much done with said family member, so while I'm choosing not to air someone elses dirty laundry that ripped a whole into my husband's heart, you can add that to the list of mini-disasters. Mkay?

Vent Explanation over.

All in all, it was an exhausting experience, but, it's mostly over. While we loved M's surgeon, we hated the recovery hospital staff and I hope to never return to this experience anytime soon (it will come again one day, when M's new hip will have worn, but let's not think about that).

I still owe a picture dump post, including proof of the fact that I now have an 18 month year old. Also, I'd like to share pics of our new dining table and the chairs I'm still figuring out how to love.

Finally, in an attempt to step outside of my comfort zone I'm hoping to write a post that will allow me to open up a little. It's pretty scary for me. I'm a very guarded person and I like to keep personal stuff personal. But letting my guard down and opening up is something that I have wanted to do, since it is a quality I love most in all of the blogs that I read. The "Keepin' it Real" posts are always my favorite. I know my readership here is small, if anything at all, and probably will remain so for a while since I don't advertise it's existence to ANYONE. But maybe if I start to write about more personal things and let my guard down, I'll actually be proud enough to share. Or maybe not, who knows. I just know that I've wanted to get more personal for a while and have been holding back. We'll see where this goes.

Until next time...

M's an old man

So way back in this post, I gave a vague mention about M having surgery. I didn't really get into the specifics of it, because there were so many unknowns at the time. There still are, but so much has happened and our lives are going to be so majorly changed, that it's time I share what exactly is going on. On a positive note, M is not facing any life threatening or majorly serious health issues. It all has to do with an injury, and what we've been dealing with in the aftermath. Our lives won't be affected in any serious way, but there are so many things that could change for our future, specifically M's, and that's what makes it more than your average injury. Oh, and I can start calling M my old man...officially. Let me explain...

Preface: M's job is a way of life (for both of us). If you didn't catch it, he's a firefighter. He comes from a long line of firefighters and he absolutely LOVES his job. And he's good at it. I mean, I've obviously never been in the midst of a fire with him, but I've heard the way the other guys in his firehouse talk about him, and I hear him talk about his experiences. And I know him. I can't really explain how I know exactly, but if you met M, you would know too. He's just a solid, good-hearted man who is the epitomy of  "protection" and "I know what the eff I'm doing". I believe it's the same qualities that made me fall in love with him. He's just...the best. (Aaaannd I'm crying already). His firehouse buddies are our second family. Their wives are my friends. Their kids will be our kids' friends. We don't get to see eachother often b/c we are scattered about NY, but when we see eachother, it's a wonderful reunion. Without the firehouse, M wouldn't be the person he is...neither would I. It's just a special bond and way of life that only those of us lucky enough to live it truly understand.

The story begins a little less than two years ago. Without going into any specifics, there was an incident at work and M got hurt. It was his hip. He knew that it was more than just a pull of a muscle, and he was in pain. He was officially out of work on medical leave and started going through the process of finding out what was wrong. Upon seeing the fire dept. doctors, he had some scans done that showed no tears, no inflammation, etc. But he was still in pain. The fire dept doctors kept pushing him to go back to work, but he knew something was wrong, so he pushed back. He had a few more tests done - all came back negative for an injury. Some time passed and M started feeling like he was crazy. He's a good guy, and always does the right thing. He was a little upset that the fire dept doctors didn't seem to care that he was still in pain (nor did they seem to care to do any more tests to find out). But, he felt obligated to do as he was told and he eventually went back to full duty, back into the firehouse. In pain. But he did it. That was Summer 2010 into that fall. Might as well add that our little Goose arrived not long after M went back to work. Luckily, we had planned ahead and M took his vacation time right at the start of Goose's debut. It was during this time, spending 24-7 over the course of several weeks that I noticed M would twinge in pain every time he stood up or turned quick, rocked the baby and a few other times. We talked about him going back to the fire dept doctors, but he knew that without a scan or test telling them something was wrong, they'd just say the same thing - "go back to work". M's already suffered a pretty bad tear in his shoulder, and lives with the pain from that (it wasn't bad enough for surgery). He just figured it was either a similar thing, or it was severe tendonitis. All of which, in his mind, didn't warrant going out of work again.
Until the Spring/Summer of 2011. Another incident at work. This time, it was bad. He had trouble walking, he couldn't get up from sitting without his legs buckling from pain. And he certainly couldn't carry our moose of a child who was ranging around 23 - 25lbs at the time. His daily life was completely changed. This time around, when he saw the fire dept doctors, he insisted on getting more tests, and perhaps seeing an outside doctor/specialist. And that's when his course took a turn. It was with the new doctor, looking at new tests and old tests from the previous year that it was discovered that he DID have a tear. In his hip tissue. It was there all along, gone unseen. It was small when it was undetected, but now that he had been working and walking on it for about year, the damage was severe. Not only had the labrum (hip socket tissue) worn down and been destroyed, but his femural head and socket (the leg and hip bones) had been grinding against eachother. The only solution was surgery.
That was the surgery I mentioned in this post. It sucked. Let me just sidetrack add this about M: when he has so much as a sniffle, it's the end of the world, he's convinced he cannot survive and he needs attention, stat. However, when there's a serious injury, he doesn't talk about it. (Like the time he sliced his hand open at work and had to get stitches and didn't even tell me. Or the time an effing rooftop collapsed ON HIM, in flames, and only about three months later did he tell me he thought for sure he wouldn't make it out and the story of his hospital visit that night and how he just went right back to work). So to see M, in literal tears and unable to move...yeah...it SUCKED. To say he was in pain is an understatement. His hip bones were grinded down in an attempt to find undamaged bone, and they attempted to repair his labral tissue. The surgery was scheduled for 1 hour. It lasted 4. His well known top hip surgeon told me "I did my best, only time will tell". We trust and love and are grateful for this hip surgeon, and we know M is in the best hands possible (we know, he's seen a few). But at that very moment, all I could think was "thanks for the optimism, doc". Looking back, I knew right then and there...
That was July 2011. Here we are, March 2012. I don't think I need to explain...his last surgery was unsuccessful. So, what does that mean? It means the surgery that M is having in just three days is for a hip replacement. I know moods don't always translate in type (or at least I'm not a good enough writer to do so), so let me write it out: we're sad. A hip replacement is a career ender for M. He cannot be a fireman with an artificial hip. It's just the rules. Ironic that he'd be in better shape than he was nearly two years ago when they were pushing him back to work, but that's just the deal. Shitty deal, but it is what it is.
Now, I know that his might not seem like such a huge deal and there are FAR worse things that can happen in life (trust, I've learned that in the past few months if not before) than being forced out of a job you love. But right now, it's just sad. M is trying not to show it or talk about it, but he's pretty devastated. I think he feels like a part of the person he is, is being taken from him. Our way of life, our friends...it's all going to change. The firehouse is his second home and family, and he had plans to stay there until he was an old man (I'm not kidding, his dad just retired 2 months ago). He feels like he's losing so much of what he loved about his life, and it's all against his choice.
I won't go into the anger we have for the doctors' unwillingness to initially find out what was wrong, and how the tear went unnoticed. We are angry, but at the same time...nothing can be changed. So we've accepted it. It's hard. But it's not something that we can't turn into good.
The sad part will be Monday morning, just before M goes in. He'll know that once the surgery is done, it's official - he'll never go back.
But the good part will start as soon as he wakes up. He'll start his recovery. After a few weeks he'll be able to walk normal. After a few months he'll be able to rock the Goose completely to sleep for the first time, ever. He'll run around and play with his son like he was never able to before.
He'll sleep through the night for the first time in nearly two years, not waking up because of pain. He'll be able to excercise again and simultaneously gain his sanity back.
And over the course of some months, maybe longer, he'll find something new to love. It will never be the love, or the way of life we found with the fire department. But he will love it, and he will be good at it. I just know.
We are lucky. I know that some of this post is a little gloom and doom for something as simple as loosing a job, and I might sound a little ridiculous at points. But it's just the truth. It's how we feel. We will get through it and look back and realize it was for the better. Life is like that. It's sad, but not devastating. We will keep and cherish those relationships and people that were apart of that life. It will always be apart of us, it will always be apart of him. But we will make lemonade. It might take a little while, and we will struggle. But it's all going to be okay.

And M will officially be my old man, fake hip and all. And I will love my old man, more than ever.

Not that I post here regularly, but I'll most likely be MIA next week, probably two. Or I might stalk this place when I need an outlet. Who knows. Wish M luck!

Again...

It happened again. I've gone MIA. There's no other excuse but that everything is so.BUSY. The Goose is nonstop energy, and his favorite word is "out", and little boys don't care about rain or cold. Work, while I'm only there three days a week, is a constant game of catchup because, well, I'm only there three days a week. The house is in constant shambles, despite the fact that I feel like I'm always picking it up. When did we accumulate so much stuff? We need a spring cleanout ASAP.

On the fun front:
-I distracted myself from the messy house with pillows and more pillows. We have two couches (or a seperated sectional, but that's a whole other deal I won't get into) and now about ninety billion pillows. I love it. All from etsy, all involving mostly yellow, some aqua and a little green. What was that about too much stuff? Updates to come (promise*)
-I'm still collecting plates for a display gallery, but that's slow moving, and I haven't purchased any super-in-love ones lately, so no updates for now.
-We're getting a new dining table. It's beyond overdue. Our current one is a wood veneer topped bar height mini table. The veneer was stripping off because the Goose likes to pour water on it and stab it with his fork. The new one is standard height and we are having it custom made, for a deal. It's solid wood pedestal thats not too huge, but has a leaf. We're having it stripped and finished with a worn whitewash look. No chairs, though. Don't know how we'll work that one out considering we can't really work with what we have for the time being - they're barstools. The table won't be done for another week or two, so we're scouring craigslist and I may just paint/finish them myself. I'm thinking a nice aqua blue, a bright navy/royalish blue or a pop of yellow. And I'd love to have some cool oilcloth seats. I'm still thinking it over. And searching for the chairs.
-I have some major picture uploading to do. I believe the last non-phone pics of the Goose I posted are from well over 5 months ago, yikes.
-Tomorrow is St. Patrick's Day and my family is taking over the Regency in NYC to celebrate the holiday, and also to celebrate Kerry Rose. God help that hotel staff. No, seriously. Pics to follow, but here's a preview:

Thats an Irish beret on his head. It's just leeettle too big, no? Still ridiculously cute, though.

Also to come: M's big surgery, about a week and a half away. I'll be writing up a post to explain everything and all the sordid details.
Until then, have a great weekend and Happy St. Patricks!
